MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille: The Place to Be and Dine!

It’s easy to get stuck in a food rut. Going out to the same old favorite restaurants can become boring. We hadn’t tried MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille in Mansfield, Ohio since the location was known as Mama’s Touch of Italy several years ago. The former restaurant was a favorite among Indy Car drivers, owners and Mansfielder Frank Russo (RIP) swore by it. Well that all changed last week.

The MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille became a instant home run in our choice of dining adventures!

Upon entering the MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille, we immediately noticed the friendly crowd at the bar, surrounded by several big-screens TV’s with an abundance of sporting choices being displayed. Upon entering the bright, spacious and clean dining room in the rear of the establishment, we were greeted by our server. The young lady was friendly, courteous and jovial as she welcomed us to our table and gave us our menus.

After carefully examining the menu, we selected a variety of foods:

The Rueben Sierra sandwich with chips

The Lasagna Dinner

Italian Sub with chips

Cheeseburger with fries.

I could help but wonder if the Lasagna and Italian Submarine sandwich were the same recipe used when the restaurant was known as Mama’s Touch of Italy?

Our food was served within an efficient time and manner and the official taste test began.

I love Ruebens and the MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille version was incredible. The corned beef, sauerkraut, cheese and Thousand- Isle dressing were piled high on the rye bread. The tender mixture melted in my mouth and was absolutely the finest Rueben I’ve tasted! The chips were good and I  I loved the slightly undercooked chips that are soft. The combination of the cooking oil, seasoning and freshly cut potato was delightful.

The Italian Sub reminded me of the favorite sub I once enjoyed at Mama’s Touch of Italy. The Italian Sub was loaded with pepperoni, ham, salami, onions, tomato, lettuce and Italian dressing. Absolutely scrumptious and definitely an instant addictive Italian delight.

My wife asked me to taste her Lasagna dinner. Oh my! Immediately, I noticed that familiar taste I had been missing for years! I swore this was the exact same recipe we enjoyed at Mama’s Touch of Italy for so many years. The Lasagna dinner is truly a must at the MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille. It is simply a zesty dish of real Italian cooking at its finest!

The Cheeseburger was prepared medium-well just as we asked and was another reason we will be back to the MVP’s Sportsbar & Grille often. Juicy, with a taste of great quality beef and the aroma of the hearty sandwich was simply to die for! Definitely, another fan favorite on the menu! The French fries appeared to be hand-cut and with the seasoning clearly aren’t just ordinary French fries. The fries at the MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille are fantastic!

We couldn’t possibly devour the nice size portions of food, so we took it home. The following evening we enjoyed a meal of left-overs and it was still delicious! The chips reheat nice in the microwave oven and the soft chips stay moist and soft.

The menu prices are quite affordable, the service is warm and friendly, the atmosphere reminded us of a local pub where everybody knows your name and it’s a great location to watch your favorite sporting event. The food is phenomenal!

Before I wrote this article, I approached one of the co-owners, Sammy Sertell, and asked him if the same recipe was used for the Italian sub and Lasagna dinner? Sammy confirmed the former owner, Joe Carmel, returned from retirement to help in the kitchen. The Lasagna dinner is indeed the same recipe on the menu, along with Joe’s AntiPasta Salad and some other dishes.

Some owners experiment with change to find a winning combination. Some never find it.

Co-owners Sammy Sertell and Jim Jackson simply added their own ideas along with one of Mansfield’s finest recipes and kitchen chefs in Joe Carmel while creating the best Sports Bar in Mansfield and at the same time have incorporated a traditional legacy. Who says you can’t go back?

We will- often.

MVP’s Sports Bar & Grille  has daily lunch specials, musical entertainment on Wednesday evening and other special events on the outdoor patio.
