I am always up for a good historical action-thriller, drama (I loved The Revenant after all) and I was excited to see this film after months of trailers and previews. The basic premise of The Finest Hours is a historical rescue mission in 1952 of sailors from two separate oil tankers that split in two and the brave U.S. Coast Guard personnel that’s came to their rescue. The only personal connection I have is two-fold , first; my grandfather was a motor operator in the Coast Guard at the end of World War II and he told me of his rescue missions. The other is this Walt Disney Studios produced movie features several of my favorite actors, so I was in for a treat.

The very talented Chris Pine stars as the main protagonist Bernard Webber along with his fellow Star Trek alumni Eric Bana as his commanding officer. Casey Affleck stars as Ray Sybert and I have to say that Mr. Affleck is rising to be one of the best dramatic actors out there and I am glad to see him receiving such great roles. Holliday Grainger plays Chris Pine’s love interest and her role as a 1950’s woman showed class, poise and talent .I hope to see a lot more of her in future films.

V day ad rust beltI would like to say this, this is a true story and as such like all things in life, there are moments of excitement and moments that drag on. This film is like life. The film drags at times but this is real life and real life has lulls at times but it is a good film and one I think people should go see.

This is the story of every day Americans doing something extraordinary and why it make me proud to be an American. People helping people. I hope that when viewers watch this film they understand the sacrifices that go into a job such as the U.S. Coast Guard and merchant sailors as well.

.The film opened this weekend and I give is 3 /½ stars out of 5 .

3.5 / 5 stars
