Humble. Confident. Funny. A…ventriloquist? Mackenzie Bart, a student at The Ohio State University in Columbus, won not only best talent for her both pitch-perfect and hilarious ventriloquist act but also the Miss Ohio 2014 crown last night at the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield, Ohio hosted by Miss Ohio 1980 Tana Carli Dimino. Mackenzie’s dress for the evening gown portion consisted of feathers running down the bottom, a new style which she was only one of two semi-finalists dared to wear. She has been doing ventriloquism since the age of ten, which she states now comes second-nature to her, as evident by always having a big smile whenever it is her puppet Roxy’s turn to sing or speak.

Wearing a violet halter-topped half-dress over lavender pants seemingly made of all rhinestones, Mackenzie performed Mary Poppins’ Supercalifragilisticexpialidasties with her evening gown-wearing puppet, taking turns sometimes even just within a few seconds of each other. The puppet, being the narcissistic one of the two by far, tries to take the spotlight at the end by singing louder and longer plus, when later asked about singing any other songs for Miss America, hilariously chimes in claiming to be the best singer ever, therefore she can sing any song there is.Miss Ohio 2014 Finals

Miss Ohio 2014 WinnerBesides winning Miss Ohio 2014 and being a remarkable ventriloquist performer and singer, Mackenzie Bart has a lot to be prideful for herself. Intelligent enough to be an atmospheric science major, she hopes to continue her career as a TV meteorologist starting from already becoming one at The Ohio State University. The scholarship money she has won by doing pageants within the past ten years has helped pay for her college tuition. Mackenzie seems very grateful for winning that financial aid from her pageants especially since she is the first in her family to have post-secondary education. With having a major in the sciences she is involved in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Club at her school and hopes to be a spokesperson for the very few other women who also take part in it.

Miss Ohio 2014 FinalsMackenzie Bart is not the only one who deserves recognition as being a role model for others, though. Finals to Miss Ohio 2014 began with a video slideshow of the past winners. Then comes on stage the last winner – Miss Ohio 2013 Heather Wells – welcoming everyone to the competition. In addition to the contestants she and many other talented individuals sing and dance throughout the whole competition, including Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen 2011 Kelsey Barrett, professional singer Shawna Corder, and music-majored and dance-minored University of Memphis graduate Dorse Brown. A fun dance routine was also performed by Ohio’s Outstanding Teen and Princess Camp, wearing jean shorts and t-shirts and throwing beach balls.

The Miss Ohio 2014 pageant seeks to judge everything about the young ladies, not just their beauty. While introducing themselves each contestant states what college they are going to or graduated from, signaling that education is important. The bathing suit portion included the recorded voices of the eleven semi-finalists stating the specifics on how they stay healthy. Fitness especially helps contestants Lindsay Hanson from Clayland, Kara Mitchell from Northwestern Ohio, and Sarah Clapper from Maple City because of their ballet-dancing as their talent.Miss Ohio 2014 Finals

Lastly, the hardest part of pageants takes place: the interview. When asked if the U.S. government should negotiate with terrorists, Alissa Brumbaugh from Miami Valley firmly believes that our soldiers should come back home instead. Alexis Richter from Capital City hopes that the U.S. government would help rescue sex slaves even from Nigeria. Though there is an economic benefit of casinos, Jenna DePizzo of North Central stated that casinos should also have programs for gambling addiction.

Miss Ohio 2014 FinalsKara Mitchell from Northwestern Ohio admitted that she used to think that assisted suicide for the terminally ill was always wrong, but then after watching a documentary about it realized that it may actually be for the best. She ended up winning best answer for the interview portion. Overall, the runners-up, from fourth to first, are Allison Vance from Cuyahoga County, Kristy Ressler from Oxford, Camille Dyquiangco from Ohio River, and Kara Mitchell from Northwestern Ohio.
