Joe Haden and Tashaun Gipson led a healthy Browns defense and terrorized Tampa Bay rookie Jameis Winston in Cleveland’s 31-7 blowout win Saturday night. Winston finished 6-15 for only 90 yards and an interception, with 26 of those yards coming on a pass to Vincent Jackson (2 Rec, 38 Yds). The Browns defense sacked Winston four times and backup QB Mike Glennon twice. The defense only gave up 177 total yards (104 Pass, 73 Rush) on the night and held Doug Martin to 40 yards on nine carries. Martin did score Tampa’s only points on a 19-yard touchdown run and gained ten yards on his next carry. Martin averaged nearly ten yards per carry against the Bengals on Monday night.

The bigger story was the Cleveland offense moving the ball seemingly at-will with Josh McCown (17-23, 117 Yds, 2 TD) leading the way. The 36-year old veteran, and former Buccaneer quarterback, led two long drives resulting in 14 points. The first was a 16-play, 80-yard drive which featured three third-down conversions, ending in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Brian Hartline (1 Rec, 3 Yds, TD). The second one was an 11-play, 78-yard drive resulting in a 7-yard touchdown pass to Gary Barnidge (1 Rec, 7 Yds, TD). The Browns racked up 300 total yards (181 Pass, 119 Rush) and also controlled the clock again, holdin the ball for 36:54 and did not commit a turnover.

Rookie HB Duke Johnson, Jr made his preseason debut and only finished with four yards on one carry and caught one pass for a yard. Johnson did leave the game and was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter. Isaiah Crowell led the rushing attack (if that’s what you want to call it) with 8 carries for 37 yards (3.4 Avg), followed by Terrance West with 7 carries for 26 yards (3.7 Avg). West gained 17 yards on one carry. Dwayne Bowe also made his debut, but didn’t record a catch. Travis Benjamin returned a punt for 53 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring after Tampa Bay’s first possession.

Final Thoughts

-While it was great to see the offense moving and scoring points, seeing Johnson leave with an injury and Bowe being ineffective is quite disturbing. Both Johnson and Bowe are key pieces to the Cleveland offense this year, as is the running game which struggled again. Both Crowell and West are struggling to find holes and average more than 3.5 yards per carry. Another concern is Terrelle Pryor’s absence.

-Pryor (hamstring) will have to play next week against the Bears and put on a show in order to make the team. While having a 6’6″ target on the field is a great thing to have, he can’t be relied on if he can’t stay healthy. Speaking of injuries….

-Johnny Manziel didn’t dress agaisnt the Bucs and he also won’t dress for the Bears game because of a sore elbow. Two things: 1) Having a quarterback that has elbow issues because of the volume of throws is quite alarming, and 2) The fact that he’s sitting and the scouts are looking at Michigan State’s Connor Cook is a red flag too. The Johnny Manziel era may already be over after just seven, unforgettable quarters.
