Aliens Invade Ohio – Movie Review: “The 5th Wave”

Video/Film credit: The 5th Wave by Sony Pictures Entertainment

V day ad rust beltPleasantly surprised is my first reaction to this film, The 5th Wave. The cast alone was enough to bring me into the theatre with some of my favorites performers. The wonderfully talented rising star that is Chloe Grace Moretz in the lead role as Cassie Sullivan, along with Maggie Siff (Sons of Anarchy) and Ron Livingston (Office Space) as her parents. Not to be outdone the versatile Liev Schreiber (Scream, Ray Donavan) makes a very believable antagonist in the new take on classic concept.

5thwave1The film opens with Chloe Grace Moretz ‘s character running thru the woods holding on to an M16 and a teddy bear and coming upon a dilapidated road side truck stop .Is this a dystopian future movie, a zombie apocalypse film, a pandemic movie? The mind races as one continues to watch the story unfold. Then told in a flashback exposition scenes we learn that it is an alien invasion movie and they are systematically talking over the planet in waves, hence the title “ The 5th Wave “. I refuse to give any more spoilers from here on out but I will state my opinion of the film.

I highly enjoyed the movie. The fact that is starts in Bedford, Ohio and they hide out on Camp Cuyahoga delighted me to no end. The battles and scenes take place in a fictionalized version of Dayton, Ohio at Wright Patterson Air Force Base which brought a smile to my face. After all who doesn’t like seeing their home state defend an invading alien horde?

5thwaveA special note to Chloe Grace Moretz for doing a superb job being the lead in the film. She showed humor ,grace and quite a range with this character and the ability to carry a film at her young age is no small task . Will the film win an academy award? I don’t think so, but it is an excellent film to escape reality for a few hours with fun ,action an excitement.

This Adventure, Sci-Fi, Thriller movie is based on the best selling Novel by Rick Yancey. The film was released by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The Screenplay was written by Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. The 5th Wave is Rated: PG-13.

The 5th Wave was just released and is currently in theaters, check your local Cineplex for times and locations.
